Domain mapping side-effects?
-
If I take the domain mapping option offered by WordPress and change my blog url from, for instance, http://www.xyz.wordpress.com to http://www.xyz.com, does anyone know whether the following side-effects will occur:
1. Existing incoming links to my site will be lost or become inactive
2. Readers still inputting http://www.xyz.wordpress.com will get an error message (or will they be automatically redirected to http://www.xyz.com?)
3. I’ll have to go through my blog and correct all the internal hyperlinks to so that references to http://www.xyz.wordpress.com/page1 are converted to http://www.xyz.com/page1
Thanks for your help

1 – no
2 – no, it redirects
3 – nope
4, that you didn’t ask about: you will lose your Technorati rank immediately and start at the bottom again.

Just another sidenote as well, the www part of your domain at wordpress.com really isn’t there. For instance, a site would NOT be http://www.matt.wordpress.com but rather:
Using the www screws up some browsers and search engines. Just for your info!

Thanks both. Not as much pain as I imagined sounds relatively smooth. I guess still best to do it sooner than later especially given the technorati issue (not that we’re famous now anyway).
