Domain mapping: so confused and stuck. Need help please

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I’m fairly technical, but this has me confused. Please allow me to explain the problem.

    How it was:

    1. The domain is registered at Godaddy.
    2. The blog has the custom domain name upgrade.
    3. The DNS at Godaddy had DNS set to DNS.wordpress.
    4. Everything worked fine.

How I want it to be:
How do I move the DNS server back to godaddy, and have the blog.yourdomain.com redirect/ rewrite to yourdomain.com/blog?

    Current Situation:
I have looked at the instructions, but with all the DNS propagating I’m getting horribly lost in a swamp.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi designdolphin,

I believe that you’re not able to put your blog in a subdirectory (yourdomain.com/blog) while hosted on WordPress.com. If you wish to do that, you’ll have to host your own blog with WordPress.org instead.

WordPress.com also doesn’t support hosting your DNS servers back at Godaddy. What you might be able to try is use Godaddy’s own tools to redirect your blog to your http://ecodelphinus.wordpress.com/ address.

Just an correction, and an update.

How I want it to be:
How do I move the DNS server back to godaddy, and have the blog.wordpress.com redirect/ rewrite to yourdomain.com/blog?

    Additional information:
This the doc page I followed:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-subdomain/#toc

The DNS Cname is set up as follows:
    subdomain.yourdomain.com. IN CNAME yourblog.wordpress.com.

However, it is now rerouting another subdomains to wordpress.com as well, which it shouldn’t. GoDaddy and I have gone over the settings, and they should be o.k., but it could be a while to propogate.
If they are still problems we’ll look at it then.

What do I fill in the wordpress.com DNS settings? The docs say, if I understand correctly, to fill in the domain name. But if I do that then I have to fill in the DNS server again at GoDaddy, which is not what it should be doing, as far as I can tell. The strange thing is even if I don’t add the DNS server wordpress.com still rewrites the blog.wordpress.com to mydomain.com

Is this just a question of waiting for it to propogate? Because, honestly, I can’t make head or tails of it.

    Hi Valentine,

Our answers crossed. Will get back to you.

    @Valentine,

I think blog.domain.com could be fine too, but not sure that that is working. It should be working from what I can tell from the information. Could take up to 48 hours for changes to take effect. For now will just have to wait, and ride it out.

I had a look at what http://blog.ecodelphinus.com was pointing to, and it seems like it’s pointed at the WordPress.com servers.

However, it’s still redirecting to your root domain address.

You’ll need to go to the My Domains page and change the primary domain to your blog subdomain. That should take care of the redirection problem.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Valentine,

blog.ecodelphinus.com was indeed still pointing at the old ecodelphinus.com DNS at wordpress.com.

Do you mean blog.ecodelphinus.com should be pointing at ecodelphinus.wordpress.com?

The main domain and hosting were on two seperate servers, we have now consolidated those. That should make things a bit simpler as well.

  • Unknown's avatar

If I set the DNS at GoDaddy to point at the WordPress server, and then set as main domainname ecodelphinus.com in the WordPress my domain screen. Will I then be able to run the hosting on GoDaddy from a subfolder, and still have it show at the main domain name?

    E.g:
    ecodelphinus.com/ (= ecodelphinus.wordpress.com)
    ecodelphinus.com/subfolder/ (= server hosting GoDaddy)

If I remove the record CName (Alias)

    subdomain.yourdomain.com. IN CNAME yourblog.wordpress.com.

The website routing does things instantly as one would expect.
The blog can be seen at the ecodelphinus.wordpress.com, and the hosting at ecodelphinus.com.

So, it seems when the CNAME alias is entered it gets stuck in some kind of loop. Regardless of my domains is set to ecodelphinus.wordpress.com or ecodelphinus.com

I’ve read there have been issues with domain mapping getting stuck and not updating. Could that be the problem?

    Hi designdolphin,

Just to clarify — what are the final destinations you would like for:

    http://www.ecodelphinus.com
    http://blog.ecodelphinus.com

  • Unknown's avatar

    Ideally it would be:

    ecodelphinus.com/my cool wordpress.com blog stuff
    ecodelphinus.com/my cool hosted stuff

If that’s not possible technically at this time, then:

    ecodelphinus.com/my cool hosted stuff
    mycoolblog.ecodelphinus.com

Just talked to wordpress.com customer support staff, and they said the domain mapping had to be removed, and then the map a subdomain steps need to be taken.

Will keep you posted on the result.

  • Unknown's avatar

    We’ve made some headway.

The routing is now going where you would expect to go. The old url are being rewritten to the new locations in .htaccess.

However rewriting blog.ecodelphinus.com to ecodelphinus.com/blog stuff is proving tough to do. (rewrite subdomain to subdirectory).

One would think that because all the DNS stuff is going through a central point, in this case GoDaddy, that one would be able to rewrite or redirect in some fashion? What would have to be technically done to get that working?

Don’t get me wrong, but they should put a warning on top of the instruction page.

Doing this will lead you down the path of doom, and will tank your site.

14 hours in, and in the pits of hell.

I want to thank GoDaddy Support Staff, WordPress.com support staff, and Vanessa. I honestly appreciate your time and effort.

This is just clustermucked to no end.

It is proving really difficult to get anyone from WordPress support staff, this while we are paying customers.

There should really be more warnings before trying to switch domain addresses or removing an old domain mapping. It is a major major troublesome procedure.

I have no idea when this will be fixed, and a lot of links in the search engines are being broken. Not good times. The site looks like absolute crap. That is just my tired opinion.

“Warning! Domain mapping upgrade for this domain not found. Please log in and go to the Domains Upgrades page of your blog to use this domain. “

I’m constantly getting these messages on and off. This while the domain mapping is working. Apparently it is complaining about the old domain mapping which we had to remove. It would at least be helpful if it would be possible to set a visitor friendly message such as:

“We’re busy improving our site, join us again shortly.”

Or something like that. Google has begun redirecting a lot of url’s, and people are getting that message. It is an unholy mess.

Are you already in contact with someone?

This thread has already been tagged for followup by a member of staff. I believe multiple replies to it only pushes it backwards in the queue, so I believe the best thing to do would be to wait until they work through their backlog.

Thnx Valentine (not Vanessa, my apologies, typo). :-)

It was the weirdest thing, I was on the support page, and there was a blue chat box at the bottom right of the screen. However it is not there anymore. So, I don’t know.

Mostly providing updates and getting as detailed a report as possible. I’m tired however, I’ll combine more stuff in a single post. My apologies.

Right now I can’t even log into my WordPress installation half of the time because of the ‘domain mapping’ error. Just going to let it sit overnight for the DNS to propogate hopefully. Anyone else want roasted marshmellows?

I don’t want one negative experience with wordpress.com cloud my judgement. Just teched out and tired for the day. Tomorrow is a new day.

o.k. we managed to solve a lot. A thousand thanks to the GoDaddy support service, they really hung in there and went the extra mile. A special thanks to Valentine, for given a person hope and thinking along.

    1. All url’s in search engines are now redirecting properly for both applications
    2. There is still some odd domain mapping error, but most of then have cleared up (knock on wood).
    3. the domain and application hosting is pathing as it should
    4. the blog.wordpress.com is now under the name of the domain
    5. the home page redirects masked to the wordpress blog (although this is a temp fix, and I would like to find a better way).

    What is still unclear is?
    1. Is it possible to rewrite blog.ecodelphinus.com to ecodelphinus.com/blog?

    It would be nice if:
    1. The documentation was a bit clearer on this proces
    2. The wordpress.com support staff could be reached quicker in such a situation.
    3. Before changing addresses a warning message shows up in the blog screen, and directs the user to the necessary documentation
    4. It is odd to have to cancel map domain (and costly?), only to have to re-order it again, just because of a name change. It would be helpful if the name could be changed without doing that. In any case a help message stating that one needs to change the map domaining would have saved a lot of time.
    5. An easier and clearer way to change a subdomain to a subdirectory (that would have also saved a lot of time).
    6. Less stickiness, if possible, on the mapping of the domain when it is switched.
    7. Be able to put a ‘under construction’ message when doing such a procedure.

    24 hours in:
Still suffering from the domain mapping error.
Will this clear up automatically or does someone from wordpress.com need to look at this, as this is a problem that can occur more often from what I read.

It pains me to say this, but we are seriously considering if we are continuing our paid hosting in the future at wordpress.com. This is abyssmal service.

So taking a looking at the modlook cue, and there have been people waiting for a week, so not expecting an answer any time soon.

Something else why does the CNAME alias have to be set up, when the blog.wordpress.com is rewriting to blog.domain.com? Removing the alias has no effect, I don’t understand why it is in the manual then.

Granted not a lot of people have need of this, but when it is a problem this intense, it puts tension on getting it resolved rather quicker than later.
