Domain mapping, transfer of domain registrar and more

    Hi,

My situation is a bit complex and has several related questions. I’m going to try to post them all together as clearly as possible. Here goes…

I was considering moving my domain name http://www.cathyscholl.com/Site/Home.html from mobile me, where I currently have a site using iweb to my wordpress blog and creating a blog/website hybrid. I’m not happy with iweb and want to move on. After talking with folks here I decided I am better off with a wordpress.com address for my blog.

My new idea is to keep my blog as is and create a separate website thru wordpress.com using my cathyscholl.com domain name. Right now I have it temporarily set up as http://cathyschollfuturewebsite.wordpress.com/ Got that so far? Okay, so here are a few questions…

    1) Evidently I am now pointing my domain from Network Solutions to Mobile Me rather than forwarding it? Network Solutions wants to charge me an extra $12.99 per year for web forwarding! (Which I don’t understand because I don’t pay anything now for pointing the domain to Mobile Me.) I know I will need to use the domain mapping upgrade thru wordpress but does it matter whether a domain is mapped or forwarded from the registrar? Is one better than the other?

    2) Next…after getting pricing from Network Solutions ($23yr just for registering the domain!) I see I need to transfer to a new domain registrar…maybe Namecheap..I am currently researching registrars. Am I better switching registrars before or after I switch my site from mobile me to wordpress? It seems equally complicated either way!

    3) Once I have mapped cathyscholl.com to wordpress is there a way I can combine my http://cathyschollfuturewebsite.wordpress.com/ (which will be the new cathyscholl.com site) with my http://cathyscholl.wordpress.com/ blog? Can the blog be a page on my site?

    4) Is there a better way to do all of this that I am not aware of? :))

    Thanks for your help.
    Cathy

  • 1. No need to forward, just map your domain following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

    2. There’s really no need to transfer from NetSol, unless you really want to take your domain elsewhere. If you do want to, I recommend transferring before you map your domain here. It would be less trouble for you in the long run.

    3. You can import/export the blog content from the Tools section of your Dashboard.

    4. Yep, see 1 – 3 above. :)

    Thanks. macmanx. :)

Re: #2. The domain transfer interests me because of their high renewal prices. I think I will go ahead with it…before I transfer the domain name as you have suggested.

Now as to #3…Yes I know I can move the blog content but what will it do to the blog address? I want to keep the wordpress.com address. If I import it to a page on my cathyscholl.com site won’t I then lose http://cathyscholl.wordpress.com?
I’m trying to keep the wordpress.com blog address but connect it to the scholl.com site. Is that possible?

  • When you import/export content, you won’t lose anything. You’ll just be copying the content of one blog to the other.

    I understand.
I am not asking about content…it’s the ADDRESS I am interested in.

I am trying to keep my wordpress.com address for the blog and use cathyscholl.com for the website
    .
If I import my wordpress blog into my future cathyscholl.com site (which I will create using the domain mapping upgrade here) won’t the blog address then be cathyscholl.com/blog or something along those lines?

  • if you wanted to go that route, you’d need to install WordPress on your site from http://wordpress.org/

Alternatively, you could map a subdomain like blog.cathyscholl.com to your WordPress.com blog following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-subdomain/

Mapping a subdomain may be what I’m looking for…thanks alot for your help.

I have a feeling I may be back with another question or two before this is all over…looks like a bit of a project but I’m up for it :)

Many people use WordPress software for both the web site and blog – gets a bit confusing with the thinking but if you are showcasing your photos seems to me that WordPress would be great for that – and it is easy to work with. The dynamic content of having Posts on the front page makes your site fresher looking – or you can have a static page for the main page – with the new custom menus you have some new easy options to sort your content.
