Domain Mapping versus hosting
-
Hi, I have what is probably a very daft technical question: I have recently started learning a little more about coding and web design, and so would like to move across to wordpress.org so that I can try out my newfound (and very fledgling) knowledge. However, I recently purchased a domain and mapping through wordpress.com. My question is, can I still use my domain through wordpress.com while having the hosting elsewhere and so use wordpress.org or will I need to pay for the domain at my new hosting site? It doesn’t much matter to me either way, but it would be useful to know definitively.

Hello,
can I still use my domain through wordpress.com while having the hosting elsewhere
Yes, you can do that by changing the name servers of your domain: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/
will I need to pay for the domain at my new hosting site
No, but you have the option to transfer your domain elsewhere if you choose: https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/
Here’s a guide you might find helpful. It lists the steps involved with moving from WordPress.com to a self-hosted WordPress site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-site/
