domain mapping versus transfer

  I would like to use my .com domain within WordPress without using .wordpress.com
  Should I choose domain mapping to achieve this?

  Hi there,

  You can choose domain mapping, but you will need to upgrade to a paid plan to map the your existing .com domain. Each paid/upgrade plan comes with a Custom Domain Name credit that you can use to register a new domain, or to transfer or map a domain you already own.
