Domain Mapping vs Forwarding

I am new to WP and have just created a blog which will be hosted at WP.com
I purchased a domain name from GoDaddy which is how I would like my visitors to access my blog.
Using GD I have forwarded that domain with masking to my blog at WP.com
This seems to work fine so far. My purchased domain name forwards to my WP blog seamlessly.
My question is this: why is it that WP recommends Mapping a domain to WP for a $10 upgrade fee when I can do this for free with forwarding & masking from the registrar of the domain? Is there some advantage to Domain Mapping vs Forwarding? I suspect that there may be, but I am unclear on what that advantage is. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Masking means they will always see domain.com even when they view a different post so it confuses users.

    Forwarding is just redirecting.

Mapping means example.com can be example.com/page example.com/post etc.
