domain mapping vs redirect – HELP
-
Can someone please explain the difference between site redirect versus domain mapping? I have a WordPress.com site that I would like to redirect to a self-hosted site, and, yes, I know I just used ‘redirect’ in that statement. However, I would also like to make sure I get all my stats from the WordPress.com site carried over into my self-hosted domain stats, as well as direct any traffic from the WordPress site to my self-hosted. Will doing the ‘redirect’ suffice in this request or is ‘mapping’ the correct process?
I want any traffic going to literarydistractions.wordpress.com to be redirected to literarydistractions.com (a BlueHost site that I currently own).
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @marykeutelian,
We would need to transfer your stats over. Let us know when you’re ready and we’ll make it so.
About redirecting traffic, I recommend the Redirect upgrade. Domain mapping would accomplish almost the same thing, but since it’s meant for a different purpose, I’d use the redirect.

Hi @supernovia,
Just to clarify… would domain mapping redirect traffic if someone went to literarydistractions.wordpress.com to literarydistractions.com?
Also, if I do the redirect update, does that mean I need to purchase the .com domain name from WordPress rather than BlueHost? Maybe I’m missing something here that’s confusing me, but I just want to make sure I choose the correct upgrade for my site. Thanks!

Nope. The Redirect option can point to any domain purchased and hosted anywhere, or even to a subfolder hosted within a domain, like literarydistractions.com/blog
would domain mapping redirect traffic if someone went to literarydistractions.wordpress.com to literarydistractions.com?
Yes. Domain Mapping would point to your domain, even if the domain is hosted elsewhere. So in that sense it would act similar to a redirect. But it’s actually meant for managing domains that are pointed here, and comes with other tools that only work if your domain is pointed to our nameservers.
Think of it this way: Domain Redirects are meant for outgoing. Domain Mapping is meant for incoming (and includes tools to manage that), but it can point to an outside domain, too.
If you think you may want host the domain here at some point, Domain Mapping may make sense (though we’d be happy to switch upgrades for you if needed.)
But for simplicity right now in pointing your literarydistractions.wordpress.com site out to the new literarydistractions.com at Bluehost, I recommend choosing the Redirect upgrade.

Hi Velda, That makes a lot more sense… How would I do the redirect upgrade? I’ve found how to do the mapping, but I don’t see how I can do the redirect upgrade.
Also, I’d like to take you up on the offer of switching my stats over, possibly after (rather than before) the redirect. Thanks!

You can get the redirect upgrade here:
https://wordpress.com/domains/add/site-redirect/And yes, let’s do it after.

Hi Velda… Sorry for the huge delay–I’ve done the site redirect upgrade. Can you assist with transferring stats over when you get the chance, please?
