domain mapping vs. transfer domain name?

    Hi I am confused about domain mapping. I have a website under another host, but I would like to use wordpress for that website now. Is that what domain mapping does? If i do domain mapping does that mean that from then on my domain will direct people to the my wordpress site?

    Now I have heard that wordpress does not accept incoming domain name transfer. What is the difference between a domain name transfer, and domain mapping?
