Domain Mapping… why?
-
Hey guys,
Am just wondering what the point of domain mapping is?
I only have one domain, which I’m about to register, but don’t plan on owning anymore…. So why do I need domain mapping?
Just looking for clarification, I must be missing something obvious lol

Branding, making it easier for people to remember your URL, a more professional look, preventing brand squatting, when somebody buys “your” domain. When you tell people you’re online, they’re much more likely to go to Yourname.com than yourname.wordpress.com aren’t they?

Thankyou, I get the domain registration side of things. I register my domain, and it gives me http://www.myname.com
But what is “Domain Mapping” and why do I need that? It is only $5 to register my domain, but then another $13 to map my domain. But to register my domain… I have to pay both.
Not complaining or anything like that, just trying to understand before I buy :)

ps. Sorry, that wasn’t meant to hyperlink that address, please don’t click as I have no idea where it leads (my bad)
-
No it won’t give you http://www.whatever.com. There are no WWW’s in contemporary web addresses. if you really insist you can have one, but it’ll make you look very outdated.
You need domain mapping because otherwise your domain does not go to your WordPress.com blog.

sorry…. “www” is a habit when typing a web address.
Ok, so it simply maps my domain to my blog. The impression I got was that it was for mapping multiple domains to my blog (or is it vice versa?), which I thought was pointless as I only have one.
I really do appreciate the help, such a basic question I’m sure, but I couldn’t seem to find a clear answer anywhere

If I use (buy) domain mapping, can I get rid of the wordpress footer in order to make my site look less “bloggy?” Or, do I have to buy some other feature in order to do that? Thanks.

Remove the “bloggy” footer and your site will be suspended

May I remove the Admin Bar, credit links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com’, theme, font, or toolbar links?

domain mapping changes yourdomain.wordpress.com to yourdomain.com (or what ever you want – base blog name does not matter)
most people only map a single domain name to a blog here – but you can map more than one domain name to a single blog – but you can only have one that is “Primary” (the name visitors see when they visit your site)

Cheers auxclass :)
So it is a necessity in the end, which is kind of what I was wondering. I didn’t want to pay for something I wasn’t go to use. I need domain mapping to map my domain to my blog, whether I have one or many.
Thankyou all! Will definately be upgrading now that I understand what I am getting
