Domain mapping with masking?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Good day team,

I purchased cultivatics.com from Google Domains. I would like to use cultivatics.wordpress.com as the site, but I want the address bar to show my domain of cultivatics.com (currently goes back to showing cultivatics.wordpress.com in the address bar).

I saw this posting previously when searching the forums, but none of the answers helped me to fix this issue. I purchased wordpress.com mapping already and Google Domains has the name servers listed as the three wordpress.com options as advised by the support documentation. However, when I go to my site’s personal domain, the address bar still shows as cultivatics.wordpress.com. Am I missing a “masking” option somewhere? How can I make it so that wordpress.com does not appear in the address bar at all?

    Thank you kindly!

    Hi there,

Is there any specific reason you want to mask your site? As in wordpress.com you can map your site to a new domain using domain mapping.

If you would like to use it here on WordPress.com all you need to do is “map” your existing domain to your site. You will need an upgraded WordPress.com plan on your site in order to map a domain.

Each paid plan comes with a free domain credit you can use to either register a new domain or map one you already own. You can map as many additional domains to the same site as you would like, but you have to pay for additional mapping upgrades separately.

Please refer this article for more details on map an existing domain:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Please refer the below articles to know more about business plans:

Let me know if you have any questions.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the reply! Yes, I purchased mapping and have mapped the site. I just wish for it to be masked (professional branding reasons). It’s odd when one puts in the purchased domain, but then the address bar switches to wordpress.com. I wish for the address bar to stay at the domain I purchased. Is there a masking option? Thank you again.

    Hi there,

Its happening because your site(cultivatics.com) is redirecting to cultivatics.wordpress.com. It may be happening because by default your domain “cultivatics.wordpress.com” is selected as primary domain & all your other domains will redirect to the primary one.

I recommend you to please make domain “cultivatics.com” as primary domain by following the steps mentioned in the link:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#setting-the-primary-domain

    Hope this helps!

Thank you again! Okay, I do have my default site incorrectly chosen. Under “domains” at wordpress.com, these are the options I have:

    cultivatics.wordpress.com
    INCLUDED WITH SITE
    Primary Domain

    http://www.cultivatics.com
    SITE REDIRECT

    cultivatics.com
    MAPPED DOMAIN

I have two options to select from for primary. Should I select the one that shows SITE REDIRECT or the one with the MAPPED DOMAIN label? Thank you kindly again!

Hi there, when I click on the link in your first post to cultivatics.wordpress.com I land on cultivatics.com so it looks like you’ve been able to resolve this.

If not, or if you need any further help, please let us know.

  • Hi there,

I noticed you had both a domain mapping and a site redirect for the same domain added to your site. You cannot use both those upgrades at the same time, and having the site redirect can actually prevent your domain from working correctly, so I’ve removed that upgrade and issued you a refund for it.

There is no way to have a WordPress.com site display at a www domain. The www version of the domain will work, but your site won’t show the www in the browser. It is not possible to change this with a site redirect upgrade, nor with any other method.

Thank you everyone! This has been resolved.
