Domain mapping & WordPress Tools

    Hey there,

I would like to know, if I map my actual ‘.be’ domain to my wordpress account, would I therefore be able to manage the latter through the WP admin portal ?

And can I change the look&feel also via my WP portal, e.g. can I install a personalised theme on it without merging it in to WordPress directly ?

    Thanks a lot,

  • I’m not entirely sure what you’re referring to.

Do you current have a self-hosted WordPress.org site elsewhere?

If so, you can move that here following this guide: https://wordpress.com/support/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/

    Hey macmanx,

In short — my current website is managed by OVH but that’s a “.be” and I can’t merge it, only map it on WordPress and this platform doesn’t support “.be” extensions.

What are the big differences between merging and mapping ? If I map my current website to WordPress, what would I then be able to do within the WP admin ?

Can I install a specific theme and change the complete layout of my website ? What tools could be available ?

  • It’s more a personal preference type of thing, really.

Mapping allows you to keep the domain registered with your current domain registrar and direct it to your WordPress.com site: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-existing-domain/

A transfer would allow to manage both your site and domain from the same place: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

So, basically, are you an “all of your eggs in one basket” type of person, or “not all of your eggs in one basket”? :)

In your case though, since we cannot accept transfers of .be domains https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/ you’d have to go with mapping. ;)

We have hundred of themes available https://wordpress.com/themes but to upload a specific theme that’s not available there, you’ll need a paid Business Plan: https://wordpress.com/support/themes/#uploading-a-custom-or-third-party-theme

Ok now I get it! Thanks for the reply :)

What I would eventually see is to close my website that is registered with OVH so I can come back to WP and register it as a new website then.

The thing is that I really dig all the features found in the business plan and would really like to implement them to my digital project on the web.

More like a “all of my eggs in one basket” type of person then!

Please do not cancel your domain with OVH if you still want to use it. If you cancel the domain with them, it will take several weeks before that domain is released, as it will have to go through a redemption process, same as an expired domain. And even when it’s eventually released there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to buy it again anywhere, as someone else might buy it before you are able to.

Additionally, we are not an accredited registrar for .be domains. That is why we can’t accept incoming transfers, and it also means you cannot register a new .be domain with us either.

The only way to use a .be domain on WordPress.com is to register it somewhere else and connect it here using our domain mapping upgrade.

I know that’s a shame. But the main reason I would switch is because of the themes and tools that are available on WP compared to a website I created all by myself.

I assume mapping is all about pointing my website to a WP site which is not entirely what I look for — my intent is to recreate my website through a specific template I would install via WP, but that does not seem possible with a mapping option. Guess I will have to think about another solution that would be convenient at this stage.

Thanks both for your help and input on that one, appreciated.

The way in which you connect your domain to your site has nothing to do with what you’ll be able to do on your WordPress.com site.

If you want to create a WordPress.com site and purchase plan Business, you’ll be able to enjoy all the perks of the plan, even if you just keep the free subdomain (one finished with .wordpress.com or wpcomstaging.com, after you install a plugin or external theme) – you can do that while you work on your site and only map your custom domain when you’re ready.

Indeed, but in an ideal world my intent was to :

1 — map my « .be » website to WP
    2 — buy a Business Plan
3 — work on my « .be » website with all business plan perks and install a personalized theme on it

But, as far as I see, that’s not possible since WP does not accept transfers of « .be » domains. That’s more a transfer option unfortunately for me.

No worries, I’ll do something different :)

  • You’re not required to connect the domain immediately. It can be mapped later on, after you’ve purchased the business plan, and know that it’s a good option for you. I hope that information is helpful. Let me know

    Liz,

Thanks for the input on this. Can you please let me know if I will be able to enjoy all features from the Business Plan even on a mapped website ?

The way in which you connect your domain to your site has nothing to do with what you’ll be able to do on your WordPress.com site.

Purchasing a domain here or mapping one from elsewhere doesn’t change the fact that your site would be hosted right here and you could build it using the features of whichever plan you chose.

Indeed, forgot that part of the message Fesatomica sent 🥴
Thank you for the time spent on this, really appreciated that.
