Domain mapping works backwards?
-
Howdy,
So I paid for the domain mapping upgrade. I changed the Name Servers for my domain (on godaddy). After a few hours, I tried it and nothing was different.
I chose “make example.com primary” on my wordpress blog, and all it did was route to example.com! That’s backwards, is it not??
I want example.com to point to my blog (which it didn’t do after I followed the correct steps), but all that seems to happen is when i click on my blog (example.wordpress.com) it gets routed to example.com. That makes no sense to me.
Does anyone know what the issue is? I had to revert everything for the time being because changing the name servers disabled all my email accounts, which I need.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That is what domain mapping is. It makes your site here appear with your own domain name.
Do you just want all traffic that normally went to example.com to be routed to example.wordpress.com and have the site here appear as example.wordpress.com?
-
If you do a forum search, you’ll see that it can take up to 72 hours for the DNS to settle down. And we can’t give you more specific guidance because you haven’t given us the URLs in question.
-
@sacredpath … I think you misunderstood my post. I want my own domain to point to the blog… but what’s happening is the blog is just pointing to the domain instead, which is weird.
I saw the 72 hour thing… once I change the name servers, my email is down. Does that mean I have to do without my email for up to 3 days? Cuz that’s a problem. I’m sure there’s a reason for it, but Squarespace didn’t require changing the name servers when we mapped it there.
-our site is thefive10.com (currently on squarespace)
-I want to move it to wordpress, so i created the new site (http://thefive10radio.wordpress.com/)
-the last step should be making “thefive10.com” point to “thefive10radio.wordpress.com”after following all the steps (perhaps without the 72 hour wait), these are my results:
-clicking “thefive10.com” doesn’t change, just points to the old squarespace site
-clicking “thefive10radio.wordpress.com” goes to “thefive10.com”, so now both links just point to the old site (weird)
-all of our emails shut downI’m not new to this kind of stuff, and mapping to Squarespace took like 5 minutes. But after 2 days of working on this, i’m at a loss. Any help is much appreciated.

WordPress.com doesn’t really DO email. You can use this workaround, however:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/google-apps-email/

i know, our email is hosted through IXWebhosting, which is why it goes dead when I change the name servers. I don’t know what custom DNS info to add in order to fix it, which is one of the problems.
-
If you don’t know which custom DNS information to add, ask your mail provider, then follow the instructions here:

Hi, I’m having a similar issue. I created a blog <milesfrommalibu.wordpress.com> and then purchased <milesfrommalibu.com>. I read all the instructions and had help from Go Daddy, changed the DNS and paid the fee to use my .com. It’s been 4 days and the Go Daddy people say my .com now points to wordpress but still nothing! http://www.milesfrommalibu.com… and yes I can’t fix my email and have no idea why.
Go Daddy says everything is correct on their end and I emailed WP support w/no reply. Can anyone help me? SM -
@miles – did you use these instructions?
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/
-
Go into the domain section in your dashboard and make sure that your new domain is set as “primary” as explained in #3 in this support document.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/
-
yes I did everything as instructed… I own about 30 .coms w/Go Daddy and they helped me – they says everything on their end is correct but nothing is wrking. Yes, my new domain is the primary. I’ve checked and rechecked.

You can’t put screen shots directly into the forum – you need to save the image on the web somewhere then put a link to the screen shot in the forum.
-
A whois certainly shows it pointing at wordpress.com, but I can’t see it either, and milesfrommalibu.wordpress.com resolves to it.
I’ve tagged this thread for staff attention and hopefully they will come through soon and look into it for you.

I’m just going to use go daddy as the host and they have WP available on their site… at least w/go daddy I can call 24/7 and talk to a live person.
-
This is just a mess. I can’t handle it anymore. Blogger is so much more easier… WP is just a mess.

So you don’t need help anymore and would like the “modlook” tag removed?
