  I received an email explaining my domain name (without the .wordpress) would be expiring soon, and a link to upgrade to premium. I did not have premium before, though had to pay to remove the .wordpress addition. I am looking to continue to use my side as the sitename.com, without upgrading to premium. Is that possible?

  The issue is that the WordPress.com user account that you are posting from is not the owner of that upgrade.

  Typically this happens because you ended up with a second WordPress.com user account at some point and THAT account is the one that was used to purchase the upgrade. You will need to log into that second account in order to renew the upgrade.
