Domain name

Hi. (1) I have a domain name I would like to use with my WordPress blog. If I switch to my registered domain name, will that affect my followers–that is, will they still be able to get to my blog as they have since they followed it? Or do I have notify them all of the name switch. (2) If I switch to my registered domain name, will all of my current blog statistics, content and the like follow me to the new name–or does everything start from zero? Thank you for your direction.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • If I switch to my registered domain name, will that affect my followers

It will not. They will get to your site as normal. If they use your ______.wordpress.com URL, they will be redirected to the new URL.

If I switch to my registered domain name, will all of my current blog statistics, content and the like follow me to the new name

Yes. it will transfer. The stats do not reset.

A few more questions/confimrations on the above string…If I change the URL from ______.wordpress.com to my registered domain name:
    1. Do I sign up for a year? If I did and then decided to build my own website (separate from WordPress) would I be able to cancel and use my domain name elsewhere (my new site)?
    2. How much storage do I have if I upgrade to my own registered domain name?
    3. I am working on a project with a number of short (60 second) videos. Would I be able to house them on (email visible only to moderators and staff) or is it better to put them on YouTube and link to them there?
    4. This is a bit off the string–but important to whether or not I make the switch. One of my blog followers (a savvy national marketing individual) is one of my followers. She told me this week that she sporadically receives my blog posts (she signed up to receive each post); she checks the junk/spam folder–nothing. That is a bit disconcerting to me. Thoughts on why this is happening? Note: I did post this question on the WordPress site but I don’t believe I received a response.

Thanks! Make it a great weekend.

Yes. You would just need to change the nameservers at your domain registrar to point to your new webhost.

    2. How much storage do I have if I upgrade to my own registered domain name?

Domain names alone do not change the storage space from the 3gb that comes with free WordPress.com sites. More storage is available with some of our plans:

    3. I am working on a project with a number of short (60 second) videos. Would I be able to house them on (email visible only to moderators and staff) or is it better to put them on YouTube and link to them there?

With a plan such as WordPress.com Premium, you can upload videos to your WordPress.com site. But to be honest, uploading to Youtube.com works just as well.

One of my blog followers (a savvy national marketing individual) is one of my followers. She told me this week that she sporadically receives my blog posts (she signed up to receive each post); she checks the junk/spam folder–nothing.

I’m afraid that trying to sort this out third-party in a public forum is not going to be very successful. Have her email us help@wordpress.com.
