Domain Name

    Hello WordPress team!

I believe I tried to transfer a domain that I had purchased through blogger a few months back. I had no idea what I was doing when I bought it, so the site stood unused for the allotted year. I believe it has expired now, possibly making it eligible for me to use through wordpress. I am just trying to figure all of this out so I need some help!

I need to know how to purchase it and how to transfer from a .wordpress.com to just a .com.

Thank you for your continual availability and service to your customers. It is a joy to know that I have the option to ask questions!

    Have a wonderful day,

  • Hi there,

Is this for the domain, filigreelane.com, which you tried to map earlier this year? That domain appears to be currently registered with Net 4 India domains (net4.in), so if you had let it expire with Blogger this means someone else has now registered it. That means you won’t be able to use it.

    https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup?name=filigreelane.com

If it was you who bought it at Net 4 India, then you need the domain mapping upgrade to connect that domain to your WordPress.com site. It’s not possible to transfer domains to WordPress.com at this time, so the mapping upgrade is the only option:

Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Hello,

Thanks so much for your reply! I’m so bummed that Net 4 India purchased it! I was out of the country for a while during the time when that domain went up for purchase again, so I missed my opportunity. Do you know if there’s any way to purchase it back? Obviously I’m not too savvy with this whole blogging world, but I’m trying to learn. Thank you so much for your response, I really appreciate it.

  • Just to clarify, Net 4 India is a domain registrar, so someone else bought the domain from them like you originally bought the domain from Blogger. If you look at the Whois link I gave above, you’ll see the contact details of the new owner of the domain, http://www.iaad.in/

You can try contacting that organisation to find out if they’d sell your domain back to you, but you should note that this would be a private transaction where they’d be able to charge you anything they want. There is also no guarantee that that organisation is legitimate. That website could very well be a front used by domain squatters – people and syndicates that buy up expired domains so they can sell them back to the original owners at a profit. Many domain squatters are also scam artists, so should you pay them you won’t necessarily get your domain back.

So, in this case my advice would be to rather consider a different domain. Instead of a .com, you could try to register a .org, .net, or you can even wait until November when we launch the new .blog domain. If you want more information on .blog you can see here:

Thank you so much for that info. I don’t really feel comfortable reaching out to them, the site seemed a little shady to me. I’m super bummed about this, but I think I’ll just stick to the .wordpress.com for now. I love the .blog idea but I can’t pay the $250 right now! Thank you so much for your help, it’s really appreciated.

  • If you’re willing to wait, after .blog launches on 21 November you should be able to register one for $30. The $250 is only if you want to try and reserve one in advance, so keep that in mind :)
