  Yes, I’d like to use a specific domain name. I know that it became unassigned today, and yet I get the message that the name is taken. Any ideas?

  Hi there,

  Most registrars have a grace period for the domain name to be renewed. This period could be as short as a few weeks or as long as one year after expiration.

  Are you speaking of a free *.wordpress.com address or a custom domain?

  Free WordPress.com addresses don’t become available again once they are deleted. In some cases addresses are recycled once they’ve been deleted for two years, but there is no way to reassign a deleted address to a different user than the original owner outside of that automated process.

  Recycling Blog Addresses (URLs)

  If it is a custom domain, those are not released immediately upon cancellation. Depending on how long after registration a domain was cancelled it takes anything from 5 days to around 450 days before the domain is released again.

  If you want a custom domain that was owned by someone else, the best option is to have that person contact us so we can try and restore the domain, and then they can transfer ownership to you.
