  I am confused by all of the domain naming and changing options. I want to purchase a custom domain name for my existing free site. I do not want any other upgrades. How can I purchase a domain and make sure that it is connected to my existing site? What will happen if people enter my old domain name?

  If you want to use your custom domain on your wordpress.com website, you need a paid plan. As you don’t need a lot of bits and bobs, the Personal Plan is all you need – https://wordpress.com/pricing/

  Thanks, that’s what I thought. But does the new name automatically attach to my existing site and what happens when someone uses the old url? I know these are basic questions but I can’t find the answers and I don’t see why WordPress can’t answer or offer better guidance before someone pays for an upgrade.
