When you allow your domain expire, it then goes through a process that can take several months to complete described at https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/.
If you allow the domain to expire, what will happen is that every domain URL link to your content wherever it appears on the internet and in search engine will be broken. When clicked the broken links will produce a 404 page not found. It will take about 3 months for the content to be re-indexed by search engines under the underlying .wordpress.COM URLs. Additionally, someone else may purchase the domain URL. And, that is why allowing it to expire or canceling it is never recommenced unless you intend to archive or delete the underlying site.

If you’re logged into the account that is associated with your expired domain, they will look up its status and get in touch with details.
If you are not logged in under the correct username account then clear your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and cookies https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-wordpress-com-cookies prior to logging into the associated account, and provide the domain URL here.

Hi there,
stevendjennings.com expired on 2017-04-02 and is currently in the redemption period:
The good news is that you can still try to recover your domain as it has not yet been deleted, purchased by someone else at auction or sold on back-order. An $80 redemption fee will be added to the regular domain renewal cost of $18.
If you agree to these costs I can generate a payment request for the amount. Once that has been paid, we can start the process of trying to get your domain back. Should the recovery fail after you’ve paid the redemption fee, it will be refunded in full.
If you do not want to pay the fee, you can wait until the domain is released but you may not be able to get it back if it is purchased at auction during this time.
Acting quickly is important if you do want to try and recover the domain, so please let me know what you would like to do as soon as you can.
Thanks!
