Domain name

I have bought a business with a web site. The previous owner of the business made me an admin so that I could make changes but has not transferred the domain name to me. The website is due to expire and I cannot set up a new account as the domain needs to be transferred to me. How can I retain the domain name if the previous owner doesn’t transfer it as this was all part of the goodwill for the business?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

The current owner will need to transfer the domain to you. All domains on the web are regulated by a body called ICANN, and ICANN prohibits us from transferring a domain on behalf of the owner. So I literally can’t transfer the domain to your account, even if the owner gives permission. The owner is the only person with the ability to transfer the domain.

Once they’ve transferred the domain they can then transfer the site itself to you, which would also transfer the Premium Plan to you, and you’ll be able to renew everything from there on out.
