  Can I use my pre existing domain name with the $2.99 per month plan? I will upgrade to business once I set a store up but I just want to use my domain name for now.

  The answer is Yes. To use your pre-existing domain with WordPress.com, you can opt for domain mapping.
  For this you will have to purchase either of Personal, Premium or Business plan.
  So yes, you can go ahead with Personal plan for now :)
