domain name

  This moment my site is: http://www.gitaarlesrenedohmen.wordpress.com/
  I want to change it into: http://www.renedohmenguitarist.com

  So I thought: (1) first I change into http://www.renedohmenguitarist.wordpress.com/
  And then (after taking a paid customplan): (2) change it into http://www.renedohmenguitarist.com

  But I cannot do step (1) because WP says that the domainname is not free.
  However, when I go to another domain name searcher (not WP), then the message is:
  http://www.renedohmenguitarist.com is free.

  What can I do best?

  Hi –

  You don’t need to rename the free .wordpress.com site address. That’s an unnecessary step. The custom domain can be added to the current site as is.

  Here’s how to work that out.

  1. Pick your plan. Visit https://wordpress.com/pricing/

  Custom domains, require an upgraded plan. Check out the features to decide which one suits your needs.

  2. Register the custom domain through us, or connect it to us (if you’ve already registered it somewhere else.)

  To register the domain, go to My Sites – Domains – Add

  Register a New Domain

  If you own the domain somewhere else already then you’ll connect it to us through domain mapping or by transferring it. See here:

  mapping: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

  transfer: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/prepare-domain-for-transfer/

  Lastly, renedohmenguitarist.com is available for registration. It hasn’t been bought by anyone else (yet).

  I do not know why this thread is tagged with modlook for Staff follow-up.

  You can use the Personal Plan if all you want is a custom domain, removal of advertising, live chat support and 6GB Storage Space but you need to add the plan first. If you add the domain first, Premium is selected automatically. Go to http://wordpress.com/plans to upgrade.

  How domain mapping works
  Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. That underlying URL does not have to match the domain URL when you are domain mapping.

  What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. Register a New Domain https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/

  It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
