  You can do either as long as you purchase an upgraded WordPress.com plan.

  When you upgrade to a paid plan Domain credits are added to your account using that domain credits you can either buy a new domain through WordPress.com, Map your domain or Transfer your existing domain to WordPress.com.

  In Domain Mapping, you keep your domain with your current domain registrar and point it to WordPress.com. You need to make some changes to DNS to connect your domain with WP.com. But you’ll still need to pay your current provider for the domain’s renewal every year.

  In Domain Transfer, your domain registration and billing will be moved from your current domain provider to WordPress.com. In the future, you can manage your Domain Renewal, Cancellation and future transfer from WordPress.com
