  I want to upgrade to have my own domain name but my preferred domain name is already taken. If I google it, I can’t find it though. Is it possible to contact the person who bought it to check if she is not using it and is willing to release it ?

  You could try using whois to see if there is a contact for the domain owner (some registrations are private). If so you are free to ask.

  I should have added that there are uses for domain names that wouldn’t show on Google. For example they could be using it for email addresses only, or to host an FTP server.
