Domain name

  • Unknown's avatar

Greetings, I am new to setting up a web page. WordPress was recommended to me by people I respect. About a week ago, I established a domain name with WordPress: sdheartspace.wordpress.com. Unfortunately, a few days later, I changed the name to sdheartspacecounseling.wordpress.com. I do NOT like the second version at all. I wish to go back to my original thought of sdheartspace.wordpress.com. Is this possible? My need for a web page is very minimal and simple (no sales, no videos, etc) just information about where to find me, what I do. I will likely use the personal/$5 plan. My current webpage is a google account that google is closing down as of April 1.

    Thanks, Susan

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

In cases where a site address was deleted due to an address change, we can not recover or undelete that site address. However, if you are going to purchase the personal plan, the WordPress.com URL isn’t as relevant since a custom domain comes with the plan.

So, for example, if you decide to register sdheartspace.com, that will mask sdheartspacecounseling.wordpress.com and no one will know about or use the blog address anyway.

Hopefully, that makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Thanks so much for responding. Unfortunately, (perhaps) your eagerly awaited response was too late. Just moments before getting your email with the answer to my question, I decided to proceed with domain transfer from google. As far as I can tell (and I am very much a novice at this kind of thing), it appears my google domain is transferring to WordPress. I understand that this takes a few days. I saw one message that said transfer would be complete by 3/17 and another that said 3/22. Can you tell on your end if everything looks like the transfer is happening?

My understanding that doing a domain transfer allows me to keep my web address of sdheartspace.com. Do I have that correct?

You may have gathered that I am pretty anxious about this transfer taking place as Google is shutting down my google account on April 2. The rationale is that accounts like mine are being shut down due to low usage or something like that.

I am making some important changes in my part-time business and improving my online presence is one of them. I see this action by Google as an opportunity for me to make the needed improvements.

Once the transfer has completed, I will then be able to log in to WordPress and make changes/updates do I have that correct?

Again, thanks for getting back to me. I absolutely need the support. Is the response time always about 20 hours? I’m asking so that I am not getting myself stressed about waiting.

    Kind Regards,
    Susan

Sort of! Your domain should be yours so long as you’re keeping it renewed and keeping your contact info up to date. You would just need hosting too, and you’ve got that here with us.

You can transfer it here too so that we are your registrar. That way you’ll keep our service and payments for your domain under the same billing.

Yikes! The domain transfer should be complete well before then. Hopefully we can help you get more use out of your site as well.

Honestly, you can start making improvements to your new site here right now, while you wait for your domain transfer to complete. In fact I’d recommend it. You can start copying your pages over, setting up your site, etc.

Then when the domain transfer is complete and when you’re ready, you can make the site live by opting to our our name servers.

Response time in the forums tends to be varied (it’s mostly community based support) though we do tend to get back sooner once you’re engaging with staff as you are now. You’re welcome to ask further questions here, or reach out directly at http://wordpress.com/help/contact

Noting I can’t see the existing site right now, but this may help too!

I’m assuming you and Google don’t have an unconventional contract on this, for what it’s worth.

In any case it seems like a transfer was the right move here. We’re happy to help as you get your site up and going. :)

Thanks! My contract with Google is not unconventional. I’m glad to hear that a transfer was the best move. I am really glad for the support. I just did a little messing around on my site. I will be addressing this just a little at a time because I am so freaked out about making permanent mistakes. I am still a little confused. Can you tell me what my new web address will be? I am asking because I need to order new business cards. I THOUGHT it would be sdheartspace.com. (That’s what I understood in the transfer.) But that doesn’t look like that is the case. It looks like it will be sdheartspacecom.wordpress.com. Do I have that correct? Is there any way it can be sdheartspace.wordpress.com? That was my original intention.
    Kind Regards,
    Susan

  • I THOUGHT it would be sdheartspace.com.

That is correct, assuming the transfer can continue. Right now it’s pending with the registry, and usually it will go through a few days after that status.

Once the transfer is done, you can point the name to our servers and make it primary (we can help with this if needed) and then your address will be sdheartspace.com. I hope this helps!

Hi there, Yes your response from yesterday was indeed helpful. Thank you. And thank you for your patience with my ignorance.

It appears that the transfer from google has occurred. When I put sdheartspace.com into google search I get my WordPress blog. I will want a static home page and watched the tutorial on how to do that. I am confused about this: when I click on My Sites in the upper left corner, I get three different site addresses. I just want to use one: sdheartspace.com. Can the others be cleared off? Essentially, what I want is to have just one site to deal with/create. I guess I need it to appear more simple. Can that happen?
    Best Regards, Susan

  • Hi there,

The transfer was successful and your domain is now with us!

To completely hide your .wordpress.com address from showing up, you can set your domain as primary by following these steps:

The only other site besides the one you’re currently using that I can see is sdheartspacecounseling.wordpress.com which you can safely remove by following this guide:

Hi there! Boy, that was helpful. Thanks so much. I was able to hide WordPress.com and delete the site I do not want. I am getting a LITTLE more confident about doing this (setting up my own webpage). I was also able to figure out email forwarding as I am not interested in making any other purchases, suite as G Suite. If my needs change, I believe I can always add that, do I have that correct?

  • Yup, if you decide to add G-suite later and want to set it up through us, here’s how to go about that:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-g-suite-to-your-site/

My recommended steps for setting up your site:

    – Add Contact and About information, and information on how to get in touch, as well as any other pages you might want to add. Personally, I recommend copying the content over if you already had some, and adding on it / improving it as needed.

    – If you plan to post blog articles regularly, add a few to help you get started. Noting you can ad images and what not too.

    – If you want to change your theme, you can do that as well. I find it’s easier to get a good fit after adding a few pages and articles.
