Hello,
I’m trying to set up my website and found the domain name application confusing.
Questions are as follows:– Is there an additional cost to for Domain Mapping and how much?
– When I select my desired domain name from the WordPress options (it is displayed as $24 / year) I am automatically transfered to the ‘pick a plan’ site. How can I register my domain name for $24 without commiting to a plan just yet?

You don’t need a domain or a plan. Just continue on with one of our free sites.
If you decide that a plan is the best way forward for you and your project then you’ll want to review the features at https://wordpress.com/plans/ to find the best fit. Keep in mind that a plan can be upgraded or downgraded at any point. The initial purchase is also eligible for a full refund up to 30 days after the purchase.
Domain mapping is the process of pointing a domain that you’ve already purchased somewhere else over to WordPress.com. This happens through some changes in the DNS records. Do you already own a domain?
Domain mapping is included with the purchase of your plan, and will renew with the plan each year.

How can I continue with on of your free sites without a domain or a plan? I would like to trial WordPress before upgrading stright away, however, when trying to create a site I am promted to create or chose a domain name (step 4/5).
I was looking at the best way to create a domain name and had a few questions:
– If I where to purcase my domain name separtly and use Domain Mapping to transfer the domain name to wordpress. Can this be done without a plan? If so, is there a added cost?
– Can I purchase a .com domain name in wordpress without joining a plan? If so, how can this be done? When I try the purchase the name it takes me stright to the plan options without providing anouther way to purchase without a plan.

@gemmagillette, you will need to choose a free domain name at least so you’ll have a way to access the site. You can add a custom domain to it later.

If you want to host a site with a custom domain here, you’ll need a plan. Domain mapping would be included, or you could transfer the domain here using the domain credit that is included in the plan price for the first year.
Can I purchase a .com domain name in wordpress without joining a plan?
You can, via wordpress.com/domain, but if you choose to tie the domain to a site or create a site with the domain, you’ll be prompted to choose a plan. If you buy the domain to just park it for later (meaning it won’t have its own site) you don’t need a plan.
