  We currently have an active website and want to move across to word press. We want to keep the current site active until we have the new one set up, can we transfer the domain name once we are ready to go live with the wordpress site?

  Sure thing, you can work on the free subdomain (like one ending with .wordpress.com or home.blog) until your site is ready and only transfer or map your custom domain then.
