domain name

I have a domain name with GoDaddy–what does changing it to WordPress entail? Last time I did this I screwed up my exchange email–will that likely happen again. what does this cost and why would it be good to do?

  • Hi there!

To be able to use a custom domain on WordPress.com (either mapping it or transferring over), you’ll need one of our paid plans. You can read more about our plans here:

    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

If you map your domain to your WordPress.com site, your registrar will still be GoDaddy so you’ll manage your domain from there. You’ll need to add some MX records to keep the email working, here are detailed instructions about that:

    https://wordpress.com/support/add-email/add-godaddy-email/

When transferring your domain to WordPress.com, we’ll be your new registrar and you’ll manage the domain directly from your dashboard here. Again you’ll need to make sure there are MX records in place to keep your email working. We do not offer email hosting so You’ll likely want to keep yours at GoDaddy.

As for the cost of the domain, mapping is free with any of our paid plans. Transferring is also included in the plan, however, from the second year you’ll pay the registration fee that will depend on the domain’s extension (TLD):

Let me know if you have any more questions regarding that.
