  I am developing a new site for an organization who need their existing site to remain live until this is ready. Can I use the xxx.wordpress.com domain while I’m developing it? How do I then change to the correct domain name later?

  By upgrading the free WordPress.com site to a paid plan.

  But I need the paid plan for features like plug ins to develop the site.

  Then you’ll need a Business plan if you need plugins. I believe you can set it up with a staging address until you’re ready to transfer your domain. This thread has been tagged for staff assistance.

  Hi, I can confirm you’ll get a temporary address you can use while your site is being set up. You can go ahead and add a business plan, then map your real domain later.

  Adding a business plan will give you direct access to support as well.

  I went ahead and bought the Business plan and now I have a support session booked. So all is well.

  Perfect! That should be really helpful. I’d recommend gathering up your content and images before the session, and experimenting a bit if you’d like. That way you’ll have more specific questions and can likely make more progress. Have fun!
