  Hello, I was hoping to transfer my own domain name to a free WordPress website – can I do that or do I need to upgrade to a paid for site?

  Hi @animalecho1, we don’t have a free option for custom domains.

  You can add a domain with the Personal plan:
  https://wordpress.com/personal

  Or you can use your domain provider to redirect the domain here. I’d recommend against “framed” or “stealth” redirects though, as those can cause problems with SEO.
