  I am unsure whether to transfer my domain name or map it or whether there are any costs involved

  To clarify, to use a custom address (instead of a WordPress.com address) will require one of our upgrade plans listed here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

  As @themagicrobot correctly points out, the Personal Plan is the lowest cost way to do this. I wanted to add that once you upgrade, the plan (any plan) will include a free domain transfer as well as one free year of domain registration, so there is not an added cost on top of the plan itself.
