  Hi. I am halfway through purchasing a domain name. Let’s say, “surf.com”, however I am seeing confirmation that the site will actually be “surf.Wordpress.com”
  Please advise how this will work. Thanks

  The domain with sitename.wordpress.com is for the free tier of WordPress.com. If you want to register a new domain, then you can follow this article- https://wordpress.com/support/domains/register-domain/.

  However, I can see “surf.com” is already taken. So say you want to purchase something else like “surf12345.com”, so after choosing your plan (from- https://wordpress.com/pricing/) when you will insert the domain name, you will get the window like (https://ibb.co/7vR9Trz) then choose your [dot] com domain to get started with the premium service.
