  Already have domain name, can this be used instead of one provided by WordPress?

  Absolutely. You just need the Domain Mapping upgrade:

  http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-a-domain/

  Essentially, you just log into your WordPress.com site’s dashboard, click on Store–>Domains, enter the domain you wish to use in the “add a domain” box and click the “add domain” button. Then simply follow the instructions that appear to map your domain.
