  Once the domain name is registered, do I own that name?

  Depends, is it a plain your-site.wordpress.com or is it your-site.com?

  your-site.wordpress.com – you own it no cost – never expires

  your-site.com – you own it – but only as you renew the registration each year, so in a way you are also renting it, if you let the registration expire, then it is up for grabs and anyone can buy it
