Domain name

Do I need to buy credits before WordPress will even begin to tell me if a domain name I want to register through them is available? I have been trying to register/map a domain name and keep getting a screen that tells me that I have no credits and/or the domain name is not available (note: a quick WhoIs search tells me the name is available, so I am guessing I need to buy credits?)

    Any help appreciated.

You don’t need to use wordpress to discover if the domain name is available; however if you want to use wordpress to register yes, you’ll need to send the money – i.e. credits. Verify it’s available elsewhere if you’re having issue confirming the domain, then return to make the purchase if you’d like.

I used “Who Is” cause I’m kinda picky and I just wanted to confirm that the domain name I wanted was available before I purchased any credits. I though that once I tried to add a domain name I would be re-directed to paypal or something, but it never was. I just kept on getting the “need credits/domain not working” message.

So you’re saying that I need to buy credits FIRST before I even think about registering a domain?

Thanks for any additional help you can provide me

Yes, you need to buy credits before you begin the implementation of the domain upgrade. But you can find out if the domain name is available for free. If it is available, you can buy it from WP.com with the upgrade. It is cheaper to buy it from WP and get the domain mapping for $15 total than it is to buy it elsewhere and then pay $10 to get the upgrade here.

I’ve always paid upfront prior to and never had an issue so I would say yes. I’ve never bought a domain though.

I knew that it was better to get it everything through WordPress. If I weren’t so cheap I’d have the stupid URL already and I wouldn’t worry about having paypal credits that I couldn’t use…

What’s the worst thing that could happen? I buy a CSS upgrade instead and spend hours fine-tuning my borders and font-sizes?

    Thanks for all the help.

You’re welcome. Best of luck. You only really need to buy just enough credits to get what you’re interested in at the moment, so only put fifteen on Paypal if you only want the one upgrade.

Do NOT buy the CSS upgrade unless you know CSS or really just want to paste something you already know works here at WP.com. There’s not a lot of support for it, to say the least. Hardly any of us know what we’re doing with that one.

I don’t get it. I already have my domain name- I just switched one of my blogs from Blogger to WordPress, imported my blog into WordPress. Do I now have to “buy credits” even though I already have my domain, have had it, works fine bought paid, have had it for years. Even did the whole DNS check. Here you can check yours too.

And still I get that error message that say buy credits or that I did something wrong. Maybe I did. It has been a week since I moved the blog over and now any reader that wanders past will just get an ugly page that says gone fishing, missing in action or whatever.. help
