Domain name already exists, owned by myself

  • Unknown's avatar

    Greetings,
I have a google sites account with a domain name that I have purchased (for 1 year) and I want to change to a wordpress site and buy the same domain name from you. The google site is set to expire later this month. Is it best to let it expire, then sign up with you? Will there be a time lag?
    Many thanks!
    Martha

    Hi Martha!

I would actually advise against letting it expire and then trying to register it at WordPress.com. Domain expiration actually takes quite a bit of time. The domain may be unavailable for up to a few months. During that time, it might be purchased by someone else, which would mean it would be unavailable for you to purchase later one.

Instead, I would recommend mapping it to your WordPress.com account following the instructions here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

If you’re unhappy with your current registrar, you can transfer the domain to another registrar so you can manage the domain elsewhere.

Would that work for what you’re looking for?
