  Hello, we already have a website and domain name which I am looking to rebuild with WordPress but do not want to transfer across yet until I have finished the new site. Can this be done?

  Sure thing. You can work on your WordPress.com site using the free subdomain and only map or transfer your custom domain after you are ready.
