Domain Name and Redirects

If I buy a domain name with you guys and attach it to a wordpress.com hosted site, will the permalink redirection be included, or do I have to buy this Redirect service separately?

    Site Redirect

If it is included, will the redirects still function if I then move to a self-hosted WordPress site by changing the DNS?

I am trying to avoid paying the yearly fee for redirects, but I don’t mind paying the domain fee.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

you need to buy domain mapping not domain redirect to make a custom domain name work correctly $13.-/yr

The old base links will also keep working – you will have two addresses for your blog –

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Site redirect would be used for someone leaving WordPress.COM and wants the base blog links to be forwarded to your new site no on WordPress.COM

You are mis-understanding a little bit. The end game is to move off of WordPress.com but find a way to not pay for the yearly redirecting fees.

According to this page about buying a domain from WP.com, permalinks will be redirected.

    Domains

New URLs: Adding a domain will change the URL (the links) to all your posts and pages. We will automatically redirect any visitors, but note that third-party services such as Twitter rely on the URL to measure activity. This may cause existing retweet counts to be reset to 0. Future posts will not be affected.

So the plan would be to buy the domain to get the redirects, then migrate the site to a self-hosted solution. I would keep the domain registration with WP in order to retain the redirect functionality. And that is the question right there: Will they continue to redirect after moving if I keep my domain registration with them.

This is a difficult question to find an answer to because they push people to the Redirect service.

Sorry – but I understand exactly

Registering a domain through WordPress.com starts at $18.00 per domain, per year (see below for a detailed price list)

Includes domain registration & domain mapping

That changes address people see from your-site.wordpress.com to your-site.com

that will train search engines to index your-site.com – if you move to your own host – you will change the name servers to point to your new host – that will cause your-site.com to be directed to your new host and site

I know all that. That is unrelated to the question about 301 redirects of old URL’s.
