Domain Name and Windows Live email setup

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi There,

We have a free domain with the WordPress bundle we purchased. I just want to be clear on a few things:

1- Do we still need to own a domain thru someone else (ours is currently with Network Solutions) or can we transfer that domain to wordpress and get rid or Network Solutions?

2- If we keep Network Solutions, and change the DNS servers, we will be able to use Windows Live for our current email addresses? Anything special I need to know in doing this?

    Thank You,
    Gina

  • Hi Gina,

Since we aren’t able to accept incoming domain transfers, if the domain you want to map to your WordPress.com site is already registered, you’ll need to keep it registered with a third-party registrar, whether it’s Network Solutions or somewhere else.

2- If we keep Network Solutions, and change the DNS servers, we will be able to use Windows Live for our current email addresses? Anything special I need to know in doing this?

You’ll be able to keep using Windows Live email, but you’ll need to set up some special DNS records in your WordPress.com custom DNS area once the domain is mapped to WordPress.com. We have a guide to adding email through various third-party services. The instructions for Outlook.com mail are probably the closest to the steps you’ll need to take for Windows Live email. If you need any help with the process or have any other questions, just let us know.
