Domain Name Change

    Hi!

    I’d like to change my domain name. My current domain subscription ends in January. Can I either buy the domain name on GoDaddy.com and transfer my website data to it when my current domain expires (I’d still like WordPress to host it)? Or can I merely change my domain name now?

    Hi Samantha,

    You’ve got several options. Domains can’t really be changed, you just buy a new one and let the old one expire. As such, you can definitely just buy a new one at any time, whether here with us or over at GoDaddy.

    With that in mind, you again have a couple of options. You can go ahead and buy the additional domain here with us (just log in to your account’s Dashboard and then go to Store >> My Domains >> Register a New Domain), or if you buy at GoDaddy you can point the domain here towards us and keep everything as it is here, it’s just pointing at us. It still costs a bit to do so with Domain Mapping (to buy this, again go to Dashboard >> Store >> My Domains >> Map a Domain you Already Own); OR you can set up a WordPress.org installation on some GoDaddy hosting and migrate all of your content over to them.

    We have some information on how to do the latter, but it is largely a do-it-yourself type of situation (we have a Guided Transfer program which moves content for you, but GoDaddy isn’t currently one of our partners).

    To get started with the migration process, you’ll need to install WordPress from http://wordpress.org/ on GoDaddy.

    Once that’s done, you can move your content following this guide: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

    To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities.
