  can I change my domain name – such that…if I pick one today…can I change it some time down the road?

  You won’t be able to change your domain name, but you can register a new one.

  If you decide to map the new domain with the same WordPress.com blog, you can set the new domain as your primary (in Store -> Domains), and keep the previous one active — and mapped to your WordPress.com blog as well — so visitors will be redirected to your new domain.
