DOMAIN NAME CHANGE

On Fri 28 April I upgraded from a free to personal plan. At the time I did not realize (I think this is the case) that I could’ve changed the domain name at the same time when registering. Instead I left it as it was plus dot com. I understand from reading the guides that I can change it with no fee if it is within a certain time frame (some hours? I forget now) … I did ask immediately with a happiness engineer promise or msg about getting back to me. Three days later I tried asking again (the link within the guide about dom name changes) but a day later, still no reply. I am just anxious my option to change for free has slipped away. I want to change the dom name to envirowatchnz.com Could someone please help with this? I upgraded on Friday 28 April. Thank you in advance.

I’m still unclear though. Here is a quote though of what I was reading:
Changing the Registered Domain Within the Refund Period
Domains are refundable within 96 hours of registration or renewal. Within the refund period, you can contact us and we will help you cancel the current domain and register another domain at no additional cost.
At the source there is a link on ‘contact us’ which is where I twice made contact asking the above. Within the 96 hr period with ‘no additional cost’.
How should I proceed?

That’s if you decide you don’t want the domain you registered (envirowatchrangitikei.com). If you want a different domain, you can cancel envirowatchrangitikei.com and then use the domain credits included with your plan to register a new one at no extra cost.

I’ve had a look & note there are $60 pro-rated credits. I was not aware of those. What is ‘pro-rated’ & what would one normally use them for? If I change my address as discussed, how much of that credit is used for that purpose? When do they expire?
Finally, as per screen shots I gather this is where I am to change the address making the original no longer available. (I just want to be sure before diving in!)

These credits are what you have when a subscription is active, and there’s room for an upgrade. So for example, if you’ve purchased the personal plan and upgrade to a premium or business plan, we’d deduct the cost of the personal plan from that upgrade.

Changing the site address does not involving using any of the credits in place.
Credits don’t expire, but they do diminish as the renewal/expiry date approaches.

Absolutely, yes it does! You can even test it yourself – if you go to https://envirowatchrangitikei.wordpress.com then you should see it redirect to https://envirowatchrangitikei.com instead.

Thanks, yes it has been changed for a week nearly now & all operates well. My query though as concluding this thread really, is I want to change the name from envirowatchrangitikei.com to envirowatchnz.com. So it’s another change. So it will still redirect, yes? Thanks for your help…

Yes, so long as envirowatchrangitikei.com is a domain on the site, and perhaps left to expire in a years time.
I can’t see that envirowatchnz.com is registered and so this can be registered here.

Oh dear, now I’m more confused as I was told this change of name was free of charge. I think those who’ve replied recently haven’t read the whole thread. I’ll summarise:
- my site was originally envirowatchrangitikei.wordpress.com
- I upgraded to ‘personal’ with the recent discount on plan price for first year
- I didn’t realize right then I could’ve changed the name of the site to the name envirowatchnz.com so made enquiries about that immediately after the upgrade
- my understanding since the replies on this thread is, the change of name again would incur no fee &/or I would use the credits (there are apparently $60 worth of those)
It seems, (correct me if wrong), that I am just letting the envirowatchrangitikei.com expire while at the same time registering the new one envirowatchnz.com. So if I’m right then there is a charge of $33 for the new site. Can / do I use the credits I have for that & if so will that show up at checkout?

You don’t have to let this expired, but we can in fact cancel envirowatchrangitikei.com, which would allow you to register envirowatchnz.com for free as part of the plan.
I can see from the original thread, that this was perhaps the intention… Would you like to proceed?

Thanks for confirming! I cancelled the envirowatchrangitikei.com domain from your account. You can now use the first-year free domain credit to register the new domain.

When I attempt to register a new domain the charge of $33 is still there. Please can someone tell me how to proceed & also answer my query “Will it auto redirect if folk type in the old address? (Just in case I need to explain to my readers).”

At checkout there is no mention of using credits, simply the $33 charge & CC details etc. In simple terms, how do I register a new domain (envirowatchnz.com), linked to the now cancelled domain name’s site (envirowatchrangitikei.com), and free of charge as indicated in previous responses?

I’ve checked to ensure the domain credit is freed up. You can now go to the following link and register the domain by clicking “search for a domain.”
https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/envirowatchrangitikei.wordpress.comenvirowatchrangitikei.com will not automatically redirect if someone explicitly uses that address. But considering you only had the domain for seven days, I don’t see this being an issue. Any old pages on the domain will work correctly, though, when people use the new domain.

Thank you! I have now registered the new domain. Regarding the previous name … I gather you mean folk will likely type in the old dot wordpress address (not the week old one) which will redirect?
