Domain name change/removal question

  • Unknown's avatar

I am looking at removing my domain name but would like to keep my wordpress site up. If I remove my purchased domain name from WordPress.com what happens to my website??
Does it all then get directed to http://www.wordpress.domainname.com instead or something like that? Or is my website and all the pages I have created deleted?

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hey there,

    Many thanks for reaching out.

Currently… https://chrysaliscoachingwithkimberly.com/ is not hosted with WordPress.com, so we can not say if deleting the domain would also delete the site.

This is the case when the site is hosted with WordPress.com.

This site isn’t hosted with WordPress.com so our support overall is limited in this instance, but if it were hosted with WordPress.com, where updates are run automatically, we’d be more than happy to help.

To explain, there’s two types of WordPress. The first is WordPress.com, where we provide daily backups, automatic updates, a 24/7 support service and an optimised version of WordPress. The second is self-hosted WordPress, where the free open source version of the software is installed onto a server.

More on the differences can be found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

It’s possible to export the content via Tools > Export and import it via Tools > Import into a site here at WordPress.com…

Out of curiosity, are you looking to retain the content, but take it offline?

Thank you. Bluehost is where I purchased my domain but as far as I understand my website is a wordpress site… I am looking to take my original domain (purchased from bluehost) and connect it to a different host site- Click Funnels.

I was hoping that I could still keep the content posted and accessible. I was hoping that when I connect my domain to the new one, that my site through wordpress would default to http://www.mypurchaseddomainname.wordpress.com
That is what I am trying to find out.
Does that make sense? And can you answer that question? Thanks!

  • Got it. WordPress is free code; you currently have free code hosted by Bluehost. Bluehost and WordPress.com are two different hosting companies, and canceling with one host won’t make the site automatically appear with another hosting company, but you can move it yourself using one of our import processes. We have several options here:

No matter where your site is now, you can move it to WordPress.com. This page will help you find the steps to take to migrate a site to WordPress.com. If you know what kind of site you’d like to import, click the menu option to the right to jump to that section. Self-Hosted WordPress.org Site If you have a site with another WordPress host, or a local development/staging site, you can move

You’ll just want to keep the domain connected to Bluehost until you’ve got the content moved over here. You can set it up on chrysaliscoachingwithkimberly.wordpress.com, or you could even use a subdomain like blog.chrysaliscoachingwithkimberly.com.

Do you want to start the import here? If so, I’d recommend starting by registering the free address using this link. Then use the import process we recommended, and we’ll go from there.
