Domain name change screwed everything up
-
I tried to change my domain name from my personal name to the name of my blog. When I did that my blog was gone. Now I can’t see my blog in the customizer unless I switch sites back to the original domain name. Can you not change your domain name and just keep your existing blog???
.The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey there @heatherlynks,
When you say you changed your domain name from your personal name to the name of your blog, did you actually change the address under Dashboard -> My Blogs? Or did you create a new blog with another name?
-
Hi there, I did use the guide timethief noted and I did change it under Dashboard->My Blogs. The one thing that I did not do was pay to have the site redirected. Is that the step I am missing?
To be completely accurate, I tried to redirect but apparently somersaultheadstandrepeat.com is “invalid”…?
-
Yes, you will have to purchase the site redirect to have visitors redirected from your old blog address to the new blog address.
I hope this helps! Have a great day!
-
It helps for sure! Thanks to both of you.
New question: I’m assuming that it is saying that the domain name (somersaultheadstandrepeat.com) is invalid because when I initially changed the name it made me change it to somersaultheadstandrepeat.wordpress.com. However, the name that I was trying to change was the upgraded version. I paid to have the wordpress part omitted. Do I have to buy the upgrade again?
Does any of that even make sense? Lol
-
I think I know what you’re asking lol.
1. Just to clarify, have you purchased the domain name “somersaultheadstandrepeat.com”?
2. When you changed your blog address, what did you change the name to? If I’m right, you changed the blog’s address from heatherromito.wordpress.com to somersaultheadstandrepeat.wordpress.com. Is this correct?
-
It looks like you have a site redirect already in place. I did a little experimenting. When I typed “somersaultheadstandrepeat.wordpress.com”, I was redirected to “heatherromito.com”. This looks to be your site with all of the content.
When I typed “somersaultheadstandrepeat.com/”, the page was not found which means that domain is not registered.
Lastly, when I typed “heatherromito.wordpress.com”, I came to a page that looked to be an empty site with just the title of the site on the page.
Maybe this will clarify some things. Lol

Firstly, you are a saint for standing by me on this.
So, I didn’t want the heatherromito.wordpress.com. That’s why I upgraded.
I wanted heatherromito.com to become somersaultheadstandrepeat.com but it made me change it to somersaultheadstandrepeat.wordpress.com. I had no other option.
I just want one address!! Aahhhh!!!!
-
Why thank you! I really appreciate that. We didn’t all start out knowing everything and I myself still have a long way to go.
By the way, you get an A+ on the explanation that time. I understand perfectly now. Well, almost.
One more question: What do you mean it made you change it to somersaultheadstandrepeat.wordpress.com? What exact process did you go through on this part and what message did you get from WordPress?
I think we’re almost done. Hang in there lol.

Hi there,
I took a screenshot to show you, but I don’t see any way to attach it. But basically, when I went to Dashboard->My Blogs->and selected “Change Blog Address” it showed the heatherromito.wordpress.com as the address I was changing and the text boxes where I was supposed to enter the new address name had a default suffix (is that the right term?) of wordpress.com that I could not change.
-
I see! I see what you did now. You’ll need to go to your Dashboard -> Store -> My Domains. When you get to this screen type “somersaultheadstandrepeat.com” into the search bar. I checked and it is available. Click add to change your blog address.
Before you do all of this make sure you are on the correct site! Make sure you are on somersaultheadstandrepeat.wordpress.com at the top of your dashboard where it says “My Sites”.
I hope this gets everything all ironed out! Sorry it took so long to get it figured out!
Have a great day!
-
Hi again. Don’t kill me. When I go to My Sites…all I see are heatherromito.wordpress.com and heatherromito.com….
-
No worries! This is absolutely no problem at all. It’s as much of a learning experience for me as it is for you!
That is correct that those are the only two sites you see. I wasn’t thinking straight when I told you otherwise.
You’ll need to be on the “heatherromito.com” site to upgrade the domain name I believe.
Maybe this will do the trick! Let me know!
