Domain name changes

  • Unknown's avatar

I am considering buying a domain name. I have 2 questions:
    1) If I buy the name from WP, will the content from my existing blog automatically transfer to the new domain?
    2) What will happen if someone goes to the current url after the domain change? Will it redirect to the new domain?

Thanks in advance for your help,
    Mike

    Content does not automatically transfer.

    1. If your blog will be continuing to be hosted here by wordpress.com there is no content movement involved. All the same rules apply TOS, policies and you cannot upload themes and plugins.
    2. If you are hiring a web host and self hosting a wordpress.org sodtware install, then you can export the content of your wordpress.com blog out, and import it into your new blog. The worpress.com TOS and policies don’t apply and you can upload themes and plugins.

Will it redirect to the new domain?
Unless you buy domain mapping the URLs will not redirect. If you do buy domain mapping (302 temporary redirect) they will seamlessly redirect your readers.

The Google Page Rank and Technorati authority and rank belong to the root blog ie. the original wordpress.com URL. It will take time for your blog to be re-indexed and earn backlinks. The PageRank on the new blog on your domain will drop to 0/10. That can’t be avoided, however, in about 4 – 6 months time, all things considered you may be able to restore it.
