I am trying to pay for the domain name and wanted to upgrade to critiqueroom.com
with no wordpress, but it wont let me. Every time I go to edit my cart it sends me to critiqueroom.wordpress.com and has multiple items in my cart. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you want to register a domain at WordPress.com and point it at a site hosted by WordPress.com, you need to have a paid plan. The domain name & plan purchases would usually be linked to your existing blog, which is most likely why you see things in the shopping cart for critiqueroom.wordpress.com.
You can register domains elsewhere (I personally use namecheap.com) but you won’t be able to map it to your WordPress.com site without upgrading to a paid plan.

Thank you for your response!!
When I originally was choosing the domain name I chose the .com and it said it was $18/yr and now when I check out it still has the .wordpress and apparently the .com is included? but my total is $99.
Does that sound right? It won’t let me edit the plan that I want to purchase and I don’t want to pay more than I have to.
Thanks again for your help!

Have you already purchased the domain and paid for the upgrade?
In general, you should get a free domain (value $18) with any of the paid plans (personal, premium, or business). If you later on decided to keep the domain but host your site elsewhere or you wanted to have multiple domains pointing to the same site, it would cost $18/year.
What happens if you delete everything from the cart and then go to https://wordpress.com/pricing/? Does it let you pick the personal plan?
-
I haven’t purchased anything yet. I was trying to get the .com right off the bat and skip the .wordpress but somehow that didn’t work, so now I am trying to upgrade. Since I am so new to this I just wanted the cheapest plan for now, which I thought was $18 for the .com.
When I go to add another domain to get the .com my cart has:
“WordPress.com Premium – annual subscriptioncritiqueroom.wordpress.com
99 USD(8.25 USD x 12 months)
Domain Registration – annual subscriptioncritiqueroom.com
Free with your plan”But I do not want the premium plan. I Just wanted the ‘Personal Plan’
If you get a .com does that mean you have to purchase the ‘Premium?’
-
No, the personal, premium, and business plans all come with a free .com domain. You don’t want to try to register the domain separately. The cheapest plan is the personal, for about $36/year.
The way they do it is you have a ___.wordpress.com account and then everything else is upgrades to that account; you can’t skip the ___wordpress.com step.
Try deleting everything from your cart & then go to https://wordpress.com/purchases, select your site, and add the personal plan. You should be able to pick your .com domain name as part of the purchase proess
-
Whenever I empty my cart and go to add the domain name with .com it automatically selects the Premium plan for $99/year.
If I go to https://wordpress.com/purchases and pick the personal plan it doesn’t show that I am getting the .com domain.
Thanks again for the help!

When the plan says ” remove all WordPress.com advertising” does that mean my domain name becomes a .com?
-
No, it means that WordPress.com will not put ads on your website.
See here for more info: https://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/ (This looks like an old page that hasn’t been updated to include the personal plan; the Plans page says all paid plans are ad-free.)
The “custom domain name” is what lets you use a .com/.org without wordpress in the middle of the URL.
