Hi there,
There isn’t an option to have the domain renewed for a set number of years, but you can enable automatic renewal. This will renew your domain a month before your expiration date every year. Please note that does not mean you will lose a month your expiration date will still be the same date you purchased it (just a year later).
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

If one purchases a domain name directly, it can be purchased for multiple years. You are saying that if I purchase through wordpress I can’t do that. So how do I purchase it directly and by pass wordpress?

You can purchase a domain directly from us. If you want to pay for the domain up to say like 3 years that wouldn’t be possible, but you can always set up automatic renewal and then cancel that when you no longer want the domain.
You can purchase the domain from any registrar you want. We are one of those registrars, but in no way are you forced to purchase it through us. If you want to purchase it elsewhere, you just need a domain mapping upgrade ($13/year) to map that domain to your WordPress.com site.
However, if you don’t want to do that you can register it through us: domain mapping is included ($18/year without private registration, and $26/year with private registration).
Let me know if you have any questions about this.
