Domain Name Help

    I recently created a domain name on hostgator.com. I would like to use the same domain for wordpress but I noticed the option to purchase and ‘map’ this same domain name. My question is: if I purchase the domain name and chose to map it, would I still be able to utilize the domain name via hostgator? When someone types in the domain name i just purchased on word press, what will show? also, how do I know the domain name i am purchasing is associated with the domain name i recently created through host gator?
