domain name hosting vs site builder

I have my domain name through GoDaddy and am wondering if it would be more economical to build my site with wordpress. I don’t feel like I know enough to determine if transferring the domain name is good or bad.

    Hi there!

I can provide some insight into your query. To begin with, I have listed the differences which will help you to decide to choose the version of WordPress to use with your website.

WordPress is a personal publishing platform, or content management system, that you can use to set up a blog on your website. It comes in two flavours – self-hosted version (available for download on WordPress.org) and the fully-hosted version which we use at WordPress.com.

If you build your website with an external host like GoDaddy, then you need to install the self-hosted version of WordPress on your hosting account.
You have to get your hands dirty and manage everything from hosting, security plugins, backups. Also, in case of any difficulties or problem with any plugins or themes, you need to contact the individual party who handles the product.

At WordPress.com, we take care of the hosting, backups, spam protection, security for your website. We take care of everything for you from support to hosting.
You can create a site for free with WordPress.com. There are no charges for hosting your site on our servers, storage space, software updates, spam protection, site stats and more.

You are only required to pay if you want to add a custom domain to your free website or want features that are available with paid plans.

We have 4 different plans: free, personal, premium and business.

The staff and volunteers provide support for free users in the WordPress.com forums, and private support is provided for paid users via live chat and email.

In my experience, it is more economical to have a site on WordPress.com but the answer depends on the kind of website you want to build.
It would be helpful if you can tell us more about your website and what you want to achieve with it.

I don’t feel like I know enough to determine if transferring the domain name is good or bad.

If you map your domain here, the domain registration will stay with your current provider, so you have to pay GoDaddy (for domain registration) and WordPress.com (for a plan to connect the domain here)

If you transfer the domain to WordPress.com, you’ll be able to manage your domain and site in the same place. So you only have to pay for the plan every year(domain is included with the plan).

Hope this helps and let us know if you have any more questions.
