Domain name in redemption period – help

  • Unknown's avatar

We had a transition in managers, and the renewal emails went to the previous employee’s email address, which no one was monitoring. I’ve been able to get into the WordPress account and change the email contact info, but the more pressing issue is that our domain name (abccopyright2016.com) is in a redemption period. How can we ‘rescue’ it during this redemption period? Also, how long does the redemption period last? I can’t find any info on this. Thanks!

  • Hey there,

I checked and verified that abccopyright2016.com is indeed now in a redemption period. You can still renew your domain through us, but it is now a more expensive and complicated process to do so. Our registrar charges an $80 late renewal fee in addition to the $26 we charge to renew the domain. The good news is that this is still a chance of reclaiming the domain through this option.

Your other option is to wait until the redemption period is over so that the domain becomes available for registration again. Domains are usually in redemption for approximately 80 days, but with this option, you run
the risk of someone else jumping in front of you to purchase the domain before you get the chance.

Please let me know if you want to proceed with paying the late renewal fee in the attempt to reclaim the domain name. This option is also time sensitive because the domain can be auctioned off to an expired domain bidder.

I would suggest enabling the auto-renew option so that you will not have to worry about losing control over your domain in the future.

    Hi Darnell,

Yes, we’d like to redeem the domain name asap. Thanks!

    Sincerely,
    Cynthia

  • Hi there,

I’ll be happy to contact the registrar to see if we can restore abccopyright2016.com to your account, but I cannot guarantee that we will be able to get the domain back. If I am successful, I can send you a manual payment request form for you to repurchase the domain.

I will let you know once I hear back from the registrar.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

The domain abccopyright2016.com is pending complete expiration at the registrar, and is not available for redemption. If the domain has not been purchased elsewhere, you may be able to re-register the domain once the process completes with the registrar. Domains can be registered at:

    https://wordpress.com/domains/add/

If you need any additional help, let us know!

    Hi Jason,

Thanks so much for checking on this for us. Do you know how long the processing with the registrar process takes?

    Sincerely,
    Cynthia

  • Hi there,

It looks like that domain has now been released, so you should be able to register it again, either from My Site ->Domains if you want to register it with us again, or otherwise with any registrar you prefer.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Thanks Jason! I was able to re-purchase the domain name, but when I went back into WordPress, the site is the empty shell from a year ago, not what it was when the domain name expired. Any ideas on how I can get the site back to what it looked like when the domain name expired? Thanks.

  • The only site in your WordPress.com account is abccopyright.wordpress.com, and that’s the site to which your domain upgrade was connected. But it’s possible that you only had the domain registered here and was hosting your site with a different provider.

It looks like your domain might have been pointing to acadiau.ca in the past. Do you have a site on that university’s servers that you were using with the domain? If so, we just need to point your domain back to their servers.

It looks like their IP addresses that was set on your domain are still saved in our system. Please confirm if I must set the domain back to those for you.

    Hi,

We were indeed forwarding it seems (it was done before I became responsible for it). I have the IP but wasn’t sure when setting up the forwarding in the DNS Records, what Type do I choose to forward it to web pages on the acadiau.ca server, e.g. A, AAAA, SRV, TXT, CNAME? I can’t seem to find a description of what these mean (except MX). Could you please advise? Thanks!

    Sincerely,
    Cynthia

    Hi,

I totally missed the last paragraph you mentioned. Yes, if you could set the domain name back to their IP addresses, that would be great as I can’t figure out how to do it in the DNS Records section. Thanks!

    Sincerely,
    Cynthia

  • I’ve added that IP to your domain and it’s showing the correct site for me now. You might need to give it a few hours and clear your browser cache before you’ll see it.

You rock! Thanks so much. I definitely could not have done this myself.

    Sincerely,
    Cynthia

  • Glad I could help :)
