Domain Name Issue

  • Unknown's avatar

I was trying to convert my WordPress.com site to .org using GoDaddy as the host and I removed my domain name ericlouisramos.com because I thought I could then register it on GoDaddy. But now its not available anymore?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi ericlouisramos,

If you have purchased ericlouisramos.com through a host e.g WordPress.com you still have ownership of this domain until it expires.
You will not be able to purchase it through GoDaddy because you already own the subscription with another host.

If you still have ownership of this domain name then you can still use it by mapping it to your new website.

If the domain has expired then thats a different story.

When you cancel or allow a domain name to expire it can take up to 90 days before it is released. Once it goes back on the market, anyone can register it.

Here is a helpful support document on domains:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/all-about-domains/

If you are planning to continue using WordPress.org I recommend you head over to the WordPress.org forums and post there. :)

If you have anymore questions related to WordPress.com reply to this message and I will help you.

    Thanks
    LJ

Thank you so much. I just have another question. I don’t think I have ownership because I removed the name and the payments from my account. I essentially canceled it thinking it would go back into the domain universe.

I’m currently set up on wordpress.com as ericramoscomposer.wordpress.com

Is there anyway I can get that domain name back? I’m slightly confused by “mapping” I really liked the name too…

    Hey,
Not problem at all, happy to help! :-)
I’ve tagged #modlook into this thread so one of the moderators can check this for you. They will reply when they have seen this post.

In the mean time if you want to know more about domain mapping have a look at this handy guide:

    Thanks

  • Hey there,

    @lucasjoyce is dead on.

If you’re wanting to use your domain at a different host, you should never cancel it at your current host – once you decide to cancel your domain, there is no guarantee that you will be able to reacquire it in the future. Someone else could gain access to it. Also, it usually takes a few weeks for your domain registration to clear and become available once you cancel it. There isn’t an exact time, however, so you’ll be checking consistently to see when it becomes available.

If you want to keep using your domain but you don’t want to use WordPress.com anymore, you don’t have to cancel it. Instead, you can move the domain to another site

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/transfer-domain-registration/

For more information on using the domain elsewhere, please see:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/move-domain/

I’ll be happy to contact the registrar to see if we can restore the domain back to your account, but I cannot guarantee that we will be able to get the domain back.

Let me know if you would like for me to try and regain the domain for you.

    Thanks!
